Try/Fail

I’m lacking an obvious try/fail cycle.

Getting the hate on

My villain is not despicable enough.  Gotta work on that.

Oh, that’s what world building is

In my previous post I wrote that I had decided my world needed a conflict of its own, independent of my protagonist.  The more I thought about this, I realised I have done no world building.  I chose a generic contemporary American city as my setting, so thought I was off the hook.  D’oh!  World building isn’t just what the place looks like or what the weather is like or the way people talk.  It’s the shit that happens.  It’s the forces the bat individuals around like left over straw wrappers caught in a dust devil.

Lesson learned, or Newbie nonsense?

I think what my story is missing is a conflict bigger than my protagonist.  I’m calling it the “world’s” conflict, and the stakes need to be higher than my character trying to get what she wants.  The focus of the book is my character’s conflict, but it needs to be couched in this larger story line.  I’m missing that right now, and I think that is what is dysfunctional about my plot.

Where Am I?
